First flight of the Sikorsky VS-300A (4th and final configuration)

Monday, December 8, 1941

Description

In this configuration the aircraft had full cyclic control and a single tail rotor for anti-torque and yaw control. The 3rd configuration included a horizontal tail rotor for longitudinal control and only allowed lateral cyclic control.

This was considered to be the USA's first practical helicopter. It flew for the last time on October 07, 1943 when it was flown and presented to the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, MI. where it can be seen today.
