First helicopter mercy mission conducted (Sikorsky HNS-1 Hoverfly)

Description

Commander Frank Erickson of the U.S. Coast Guard flew from South Ferry to Sandy Hook in 14 minutes carrying two cases of plasma which saved the lives of several of those injured in the explosion of the U.S. Destroyer Turner in the Ambrose Channel. He delivered the cargo successfully in a Sikorsky HNS-1 Hoverfly, amidst snow squalls and severe wind gusts exceeding 40 knots.
